What is ESI ?

ESI stands for Employee State Insurance. ESI handled by the Employee State Insurance Corporation(ESIC). ESIC is an autonomous body produced by the law under the Ministry of Labor and Employment, Government of India.

Basically ESI plan was begun for Indian Workers. In this plan, the workers are given a different variety of medical and other benefits related to money from the employer. 

Applicability of ESI :

Any unseasonal factory or company which has  more than  employees (20 employees in some states) who have a maximum monthly salary of 21,000 has to compulsory register itself with the ESIC. 

Contribution of the Employer :

According to this plan, the boss of the company needs to contribute an amount of  3.25% of the total monthly salary that is payable to the employee. However the boss of the company needs to contribute only 0.75% of his/her monthly salary. There is only relief in the contribution to those employees whose salary is less than 176 rupees per day.

What is ESI Return ?

ESI registered organizations have to File ESI Return on the monthly basis. This scheme comes under the ESI Act 1948. Employees’ State Insurance Corporation(ESIC) gives benefits to the employee in case of medical issues, death etc.

How to File ESIC Return ?

If an employer who is eligible can file the ESIC Return in the following steps :

  • All the needed documents are kept ready by the employer for reference.

 

  • After that, an employer should file a Form-1. Form-1 is available in the PDF format on the website of ESIC. ESIC confirms all the details and then issues a 17 digits unique number. This 17 digits number is required for all the filings.

 

  • Employees will get an ESI card post submission of the form stating all details by the employer. The documents required for registration are :
  1. Bank details.
  2. All the employee details and salary information.
  3. All the Company’s Partners, Shareholders and directors details.
  4. PAN Card of the organization.
  5. Address proof of the organization.
  6. The license obtained under Shop and Establishment Act or Factories Act.
  7. Documents needed as per the nature of the organization : Memorandum in case of a company, Articles of Association, partnership deed in case of a partnership and Limited Liability Partnership.

 

 

  • For Filing the return, the employer must verify all the employee details and then File the return.

 

  • Further, the employer should fill all the bank details and submit it to the File return.

 

  • After this, an employer can go to the options like “List of Actions” and “Generate Challan”. And then download the Challan for future reference.

 

  • If any payment is due then complete the due payments.

Documents Required to File ESI Return :

The documents are required to File ESI Return are :

  1. The license obtained under Shop and Establishment Act or Factories Act.
  2. Documents needed as per the nature of the organization : Memorandum in case of a company, Articles of Association, partnership deed in case of a partnership and Limited Liability Partnership.
  3. Form-6.
  4. Bank statement of the organization.
  5. Inspection book and certificate.
  6. Details of the employee and also the register attendance book of the employee.
  7. Wages Registry.
  8. PAN Card of the organization.
  9. All the employee details and salary information.
  10.  All the Company’s Partners, Shareholders and directors details.

When can the ESI Return File ?

The ESI Return is filed on the half-yearly basis. For the period of April to September is due by 12 November and October to March is due by 12 May.
