What is a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) ?

Digital Signature Certificate is nothing but the digital or electronic form of a physical certificate. Examples of physical certificates are Drivers’ license, membership card or passport. The purpose of these certificates is to behave as the identity of an individual. For example, a driving license is the proof of a driver that he/she can drive legally in a particular country. Similarly, a digital certificate behaves like the same. Here you can represent the certificate electronically to prove your identity, to retrieve information or services on the internet or to sign some documents digitally.

What is the requirement of a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) ? 

Since physical documents are signed manually but at the time of e-forms where the digital signature is required, it can be signed digitally using a digital signature certificate. 

By whom can you issue a digital signature certificate ?

Digital Signature Certificate can be issued by a licensed Certifying Authority(CA). A Certifying Authority is a trusted third party who issues digital certificates under section 24 of the Indian IT-Act 2000.

What are the different processes of applying DSC from CA ?

  1. Digital Signature Applicants can directly contact the Certifying Authorities(CAs) and they need to submit the original documents and self-attested copies.
  2. Digital Signature Applicants can also get the DSCs from the CA using Aadhaar eKYC based authentication.
  3. A letter issued by a bank containing all the information of a Digital Signature Applicants can be accepted but the letter should be certified by the bank manager.

What is the cost of applying for a DSC ?

The cost of applying for a digital signature certificate is vary because there are so many entities issuing DSCs and their cost may be differ. 

How much time taken by a CAs to issue the DSC ?

It is a very simple process so generally CAs can issue the DSC within a day.

What is the validity period of DSC ?

The DSC can be valid for up to one or two years.

What documents need to be submitted ?

  1. Printout of completed class-II form.
  2. Identity Proof : Copy of the PAN Card or in case of foreigners, copy of the passport.
  3. Address Proof : Copy of Aadhaar Card, License, Passport, Voter ID Card, Ration Card, Utilities Bill. If an individual is submitting a Utilities Bill(Gas/Telephone), it should not be older than 1 months for an Indian applicant and not more than 12 months for a foreigner applicant. Bill must be in the name of the applicant.

Is a Director Identification Number(DIN) required to apply for DSC ?

There is no need to submit the DIN while applying for DSC.

Types of Certificates ?

There are three types of DSC :

  1. Sign
  2. Encrypt
  3. Sign and Encrypt
  • Sign : This DSC can be used only for signing documents. You can use this in the signing of PDS files or Tax Returns, MCA and other websites. Signing using a Sign DSC gives the certainty of not only the integrity of a signer but also the data.
  • Encrypt : This DSC can be used only to encrypt the documents. It is basically used in the tender portal so that companies get help to encrypt the documents and upload. 
  • Sign and Encrypt : This DSC can be used for both signing and encrypting. It is most convenient for the user. It is useful for the users who want to authenticate and maintain the confidentiality of the information shared. It is used to file the government form and application.

Classes of Certificate :

Class 1 Certificate :  This class certificate shall be issued for Private individuals as well as for Business personal usage. This certificate will ensure that the information filled by the applicant does not clash with the information in a well-organized database. This certificate gives a basic assurance in the area where there are risks and consequences of data compromise.

Class 2 Certificate :  This class certificate shall be issued for Private individuals as well as for Business personal usage. This certificate will ensure that the information filled by the applicant does not clash with the information in a well-organized database. This certificate gives a moderate assurance in the area where there are risks and consequences of data compromise.

Class 3 Certificate :  This class certificate shall be issued for individuals as well as organizations. This certificate gives a high assurance in the area where there are risks and consequences of data compromise.

What are the benefits of DSC ?

  • Helpful in authentication of an individual’s personal information.
  • It reduces the time as well as cost. In physical documents you have to sign and then scan the paper to send them via email. Using DSC you can sign digitally and send them quickly.
  • Documents which are signed digitally can’t be edited further so it makes data safe and secure.
